A classic of the northern Mediterranean and, for many, the most rewarding coastline for sailing. Two hundred kilometers of cliffs, pine forests, and coves\u2014many accessible only from the sea\u2014between Blanes and Cap de Creus. Cadaqu\u00e9s, Cala Culip, and the coves of the Montgr\u00ed Massif are must-see stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When: May through October. Be aware of the tramontana wind, which can blow strongly in the northern part of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mallorca offers enough to take a full week-long circumnavigation (Palma, Cabrera, Portocolom, S\u00f3ller, Andratx); Menorca boasts the country\u2019s most photographed white-sand coves, including Cala Galdana and Cala Macarella; and Ibiza and Formentera\u2014the Pitiusas Islands\u2014combine a lively atmosphere with picture-perfect anchorages like S\u2019Espalmador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When: April through October. Two important notes: in the Balearic Islands You cannot anchor in Posidonia seagrass beds<\/strong> \u2014Use the eco-friendly buoys in regulated areas\u2014and visiting Cabrera National Park with your own boat requires a navigation permit; to stay overnight, you\u2019ll also need an anchoring permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Costa Blanca (Valencian Community)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A pleasant coastline, with good thermal winds in the afternoon and plenty of coves where you can anchor. D\u00e9nia and X\u00e0bia are popular starting points, and the island of Tabarca\u2014a marine reserve\u2014or the natural pool at Portitxol are perfect day trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When: practically all year round, with spring and fall being the ideal seasons due to the lack of crowds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mar Menor and Costa C\u00e1lida (Murcia)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The best place to start if you're just beginning or sailing with your family. The Mar Menor is a lagoon with calm, shallow waters, ideal for learning without any surprises, and the Costa C\u00e1lida offers sheltered beaches and fishing villages just a short distance away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When: From spring to fall. Keep an eye on the water depth in the Mar Menor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andaluc\u00eda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The only coastline that offers you both seas. On its Mediterranean side, the Costa del Sol (M\u00e1laga, Marbella, Benalm\u00e1dena<\/strong>) offers plenty of sunshine and port facilities for short, comfortable routes, while the Granada's Costa Tropical<\/strong> It is known for its steady winds and calm waters, which make it possible to sail there almost year-round. Further east, the Cabo de Gata (Almer\u00eda)<\/strong> It is a natural park: a unique volcanic landscape and a regulated anchorage. And once in the Atlantic, the Costa de la Luz in C\u00e1diz<\/strong> It completely changes the atmosphere; the tides and the easterly and westerly winds come into play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When: The season is very long on the Mediterranean side (from March to November). On the Atlantic side, spring and early fall, avoiding days with strong easterly winds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

R\u00edas Baixas (Galicia)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most sheltered and lush part of the Atlantic. The estuaries of Arousa, Pontevedra, and Vigo offer sheltered waters, secluded coves, and fishing villages with cuisine that\u2019s hard to beat. The jewel of the region is the C\u00edes Islands, located within the Atlantic Islands National Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When: summer, weather permitting. To sail to and anchor at the C\u00edes Islands, you need a permit from the National Park: apply for it in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canary Islands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Real sailing, all year round. The trade winds and the channels between the islands make the Canary Islands a great destination for sailing, with trips between the islands and to places like La Graciosa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When: Any time of year; the weather is stable. Be mindful of the trade winds: they can pick up considerably in the channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Choose Your Getaway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you have a weekend, consider short distances and a destination close to where you\u2019re based. If you have a week or more, hopping between archipelagos might be an interesting option. And if you\u2019re just starting out in sailing, prioritize calm waters like the Mar Menor or the Costa Blanca. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
