In recreational boating, one of the most common challenges is arriving in port and identifying the appropriate berth. This problem is intensified when visibility conditions are low, when the interior layout of the harbor is unknown, or when directions from harbor personnel are confusing. Often, signage inside ports is unclear, which can result in accidents, unnecessary traffic and dangerous maneuvers.
The PortView project, funded by Ports 4.0 of Puertos del Estado, arises to address these problems, offering an accessible solution for those who do not have advanced navigation systems, especially on smaller vessels. By leveraging mobile device technology, this project seeks to democratize access to advanced navigation tools.
The innovative core of PortView is based on a combination of cutting-edge technologies integrated into a mobile application, eliminating the need for costly and difficult-to-use specialized equipment. This maximizes the number of mariners who can benefit from this tool.
Why Portview?
Portview was created with the mission to address and solve specific challenges in recreational boating. These are the fundamental reasons behind its existence:
- Digitizing Port Navigation: Portview seeks to transform the experience of arriving in port and finding the right berth, eliminating confusion and stress. By digitizing this process, the application offers clear and accurate tools that benefit both ports and their users.
- Improve Port Safety: Erratic navigation within a port can result in dangerous maneuvers and avoidable accidents. Portview was created to minimize these risks by guiding vessels safely and efficiently to their mooring point.
- Optimize Port Traffic Flow: A vessel that gets lost within the port can cause congestion and unnecessary traffic. Portview exists to optimize traffic flow, ensuring that each vessel reaches its destination quickly and smoothly.
- Connecting Ports: Portview was designed to break down communication barriers between ports. By automatically connecting them through the Internet, the application facilitates the exchange of information and promotes collaboration between different ports.
- Boosting the Economic and Social Development of Ports: Portview not only seeks to improve the navigation experience, but also to generate a positive impact on the port-logistic environment. By fostering employment and stimulating innovation, the application contributes to the economic and social development of port communities.
In short, Portview exists to make recreational boating safer, more efficient and more accessible, while fostering growth and collaboration within the port industry.
And now what
This project is an extension of the ShoreView application, which already uses augmented reality to recognize coastal profiles in navigation outside ports. PortView will integrate real data enriched with augmented reality, including hazardous spots and directions to the selected mooring.
What sets PortView apart is that it does not simply apply technologies already widespread in the port industry. Instead, it stems from a solid Research and Experimental Development activity previously carried out by Shoreview.
In the following weeks PortView will be available in test mode for users who want to participate in this project. If you are interested in being one of the "beta-testers" for PortView in the port of La Marina de Valencia, just write to us through social networks or to claudia@shoreview.app.
